Hi! My name is Nabrissa Badu and I am a photographer, musician, and enjoyer of anything that speaks to the senses. Growing up in a Ghanaian-Swedish household in London, from a young age I learned to love bold flavors, iconic anthems, and both food and music as universal love languages. My creative journey has led me to New York City, a strong contender for being the food and music capital of the world. My work is continually inspired by the vibrant culinary scene, diverse musical landscape and the eclectic community of people who share my passions.
What feeds the soul?
The bond between music and food may not be an obvious one at first, however, the two are allied, sacred necessities and they form the basis of my greatest passions. Think back to your strongest memories, I am certain many of these will feature a certain dish or track that can transport you right back to a moment. When I hear ‘Waiting In Vain’ by Bob Marley and The Wailers I am six-years old again in the passenger seat, crawling through London traffic with my Dad. The fatty smell of warm butter escaping the oven brings me back to the Yorkshire puddings I would devour at every Sunday roast. The yellow rays of a sliced plantain blistering on a frying pan bring me back to my only memory of my Grandma out of a wheel-chair. From a psychological perspective, music and food provide palpable sensory cues that allow the deep embedding of memories. The rich sensory information food and music carry are encoded into the long-term store, anchoring memory and providing a vehicle for later retrieval. No other elements of our human experience combine the past and present in as much of a profound way than music and food. That it why I dedicate my time to capturing both.
